European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe said: "Robert Fico’s unilateral veto breaks Europe’s unity at a critical hour, and undermines the strong calls made at the European Council on 26 June, where EU leaders condemned Russia’s war, demanded a ceasefire, and committed to bolstering Ukraine’s defence capabilities. The veto by the Prime Minister of Slovakia is outright sabotage. One single leader should not be able to derail Europe’s united stance on peace, democracy, and international law. We urgently call on the European Council to replace the unanimity rule in EU foreign policy with qualified majority voting, especially regarding support to Ukraine.”
European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi added: “Robert Fico’s meeting with Vladimir Putin in May 2025 sent shockwaves across Europe. Fico’s veto confirms what many feared: he is acting as Russia’s Trojan horse within the European Council. We want Europe to know: attacks on Ukraine deserve urgent, unified sanctions. We urge EU Member States and institutions to build upon the commitments made on 26 June and to prepare a path forward that overcomes Fico’s damaging veto. Europe must match its words with action.”
The European Green Party underscores that in March this year, green leaders from across Europe re-iterated their full solidarity with Ukraine and called on the EU to remove unanimity from foreign-policy decisions to enable decisive action.
