Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party, said:
“One year ago, Viktor Orbán tried to ban Budapest Pride. This year, Budapest will march free. Last year, together with Green Mayor Gergely Karácsony, the people defended the fundamental rights to assemble, to love and to live free from discrimination. More than 200,000 people showed that no government can silence freedom. Today, Budapest Pride no longer needs to hide. This is not only a victory for the LGBTI community, it is a victory for democracy, the rule of law and everyone who believes that freedom cannot be banned. Budapest has sent a message to Europe and the world: no authoritarian leader is invincible. When people stand together, freedom wins.”
Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party, said:
“Last year’s Pride became an act of defiance against Orbán. It showed the people that they were not alone, that Orbán could be defeated, which culminated into his landslide electoral defeat. The message that, when people mobilise, they can free themselves from far-right autocrats is very inspiring for the people in Turkey, in Serbia, and for everyone all over the world who is fighting for democracy and freedom.”
