Ciarán Cuffe: “With the Green Left bringing five ministers into the Cabinet, this will be Denmark’s greenest government ever. Congratulations to Pia Olsen Dyhr and the SF team for their important roles in government. We already see the Green fingerprints in the government proposals to bring solutions to the cost-of-living crisis, with removing VAT on fruits and vegetables, investing in public services such as schools and daycare, and offering free public transport to young people."
Vula Tsetsi: “The entry of the Green Left in the Danish government is another clear signal of rising support for Green parties across Europe. There is a clear appetite among voters to put social welfare, climate and environmental action back at the top of the political agenda. Europeans support the strategy to invest in renewables to secure European energy independence. People are choosing a future that protects their health, their environment, and their economy. The Danish success confirms strong recent results for Green parties across Europe.”
Background
In November, the Green Left was a big winner in Denmark’s local elections, with Sisse Marie Welling becoming the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen. In the Dutch local elections, GroenLinks-PvdA has won the most votes nation-wide and came out first in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and five of the Netherlands’ other ten biggest cities. In the UK, the Green Party of England and Wales and the Scottish Greens had their best ever election result. The German Greens achieved a major regional victory in Baden-Württemberg, and won the Mayorship of Munich for the first time.
The Green Left has been a full member of the European Green Party since 2014.
