Living with, not against nature. We stand for the respectful treatment of the environment and animals, and support sustainable means of food production.
Green parties are committed to protect ecosystems and biodiversity and to promote consumers’ rights to sustainable and healthy food. We believe in an agricultural transformation that gives priority to sustainable and organic farming and ends the desolate situation of traditional farming and small farmers in the industrial countries, as well as in the global south. We are working to end intensive factory farming, and promote strong animal welfare standards. Our commitment is to put local farmers, local food cooperatives and consumers first.
Good food is everyone’s right. We stand for shorter food chains that link consumers and producers together in fair regional partnerships. High quality standards have to be applied to everything we eat and drink, therefore we want to make sure that consumers know exactly all ingredients and where their produce came from.
Our current agriculture and food production is anything but sustainable. Intensive food production leads to monoculture, soil and land degradation, contamination of the groundwater and the extinction of species. It causes unnecessary harm to animals, which are hardly treated as living creatures. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the extensive use of pesticides are a threat to our health and the environment. We are therefore opposed to intensive farming as it causes damage to Europe’s ecosystem and biodiversity.
We support measures for the protection and sustainable use of vital natural resources. The time is now to demand a healthier and sustainable way of food production and a considerate handling of the natural foundations of life. Caring about the wellbeing of mankind, animals and nature, and ensuring a decent life for present and future generations has to be at the core of responsible politics.
