Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said: “By moving forward with a coalition with the far right, the Romanian Social Democrats have crossed a red line the Party of European Socialists (PES) has themselves set in Europe: refusing political cooperation with extremist forces.”
“Romania’s government has fallen after a no-confidence vote triggered by shifting parliamentary alliances, including cooperation between the centre-left PSD and the far right. The developments also put the PES and S&D Group in the European Parliament in a politically very damaging position and add to the instability in the country at a particularly critical moment, deepening political uncertainty across Europe. It is up to the PES and S&D to take up their responsibilities for this political failure”, Tsetsi said.
Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, added: "The developments in Romania are not just a national issue; they are a European warning sign. When mainstream parties collaborate with the far right, even tactically, they strengthen the forces that undermine democracy and the European Union itself. This is the dangerous path that democratic parties must avoid at all costs. We have already seen with the European People’s Party, how such choices erode a fundamental democratic principle and in addition legitimise the far right."
