Vula Tsetsi, Co-chair of the European Green Party, said: “António Costa’s visit is a moment of clarity for the European Union. Less than two weeks ago 200,000 people called for Vučić’s resignation and free elections in one of the largest protests that Belgrade has seen, so the EU cannot give the impression that business continues as usual. It must stand with the people of Serbia, not with the authoritarian regime of Vučić."
"We ask Costa to publicly tell Vučić that his political course is clearly not aligned with the EU values. And Costa must meet not only President Vučić, but also opposition representatives, independent media and civil society. Serbia’s European future belongs to its citizens. Only by defending the rule of law and democracy will the EU regain credibility and remain a meaningful political choice for Serbia.”
“Serbian President Vučić complains about the EU accession rhythm in interviews, but he should realise that actually he himself, with his neglect of democracy and rule of law, is at this moment the biggest obstacle to Serbia's path to Europe.”
Ciarán Cuffe, Co-chair of the European Green Party, added: “This visit follows a pattern we have already criticised, including the October 2025 visit of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. These repeated high-level meetings normalise repression and weaken EU leverage."
"We are also concerned by President Vučić’s parallel engagement with Russia, having attended Putin’s Victory Parade in 2025, and meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping last week, which sits uneasily with his stated EU path. Vučić should realise that the European Union is not just another geopolitical option, it is a political and democratic project based on shared values and commitments.”
The European Green Party expresses full solidarity with the Green-Left Front, as well as with students, civil society, and all those in Serbia demanding accountability, rule of law, and free elections.
