Today is Europe Day, and the leaders of the European Green Party (EGP), the Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament, the Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG), and Green parties across Europe have signed the joint Green call for a democratic, united and federal Europe, that asks for a renewed European social contract that empowers citizens, strengthens the rule of law, and protects the climate and environment.
Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party commented: “The European project has been and remains the greatest antidote to nationalism, fascism and tyranny. From Putin's war in Ukraine, Trump's threats to Canada and Greenland, Netanyahu's plans to occupy Gaza, to the democratic rollbacks in Hungary, Slovakia, Turkey, and Georgia: violence and division have once again risen to the fore. Europe withstood it before and will do so again. Next week, as Poland, Portugal and Romania go to the polls, let's again resist the far right’s attempts to take away our freedom. Europe must boldly stand its ground and move forward - free, green and just.”
Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party added: “The challenges Europe faces today—from economic insecurity to the climate crisis—require a more united European Union. Citizens are demanding solutions and fairness, and their expectations toward the EU are clear: they want leadership that improves lives, protects freedoms, and secures our shared future. We must seize this moment to deepen European integration as a concrete commitment to deliver on housing, jobs, health, and sustainability and security. Pro-European forces must act with unity and determination to show that Europe is the answer.”
In the statement, Green leaders call for deeper European integration and advocate for a more united, democratic, social and federal Europe, starting with five concrete priorities: a fiscal union, an end to veto politics, a Green Deal-driven industrial strategy, a common approach to security and defence, and a commitment to enlargement. The aim of these reforms is to make Europe stronger and enlarge its scope of action in order to face the current turbulent times.
