At the congress of the European Green Party in Lisbon, Green parties united behind their bold vision for Europe and issued a stark warning over the European People’s Party’s open cooperation with the far right.
“The European People’s Party (EPP) of Manfred Weber is no longer only flirting with the far right, it is governing with it. By normalising this cooperation in the European Parliament, they are actively bringing extremists affiliated to Orbán, Meloni, Le Penand Ventura to power. These are not just attacks on climate action. They are attacks on the European project itself: on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights. The biggest political scandal of 2025 is that the EPP now does this openly, week after week, while still pretending to defend European values', Co-Chair Vula Tsetsiof the European Green Party said.
She pointed to the recent European Parliament votes on due diligence, and on deforestation, where the conservatives of the European People’s Party EPP aligned themselves with far-right groups, breaking the democratic firewall that kept extremists out of power.
EGP Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe highlighted the Greens’ recent victory in Copenhagen: With Sisse-Marie Welling from the EGP member party SF elected as Mayor of Copenhagen, there are now 5 European capitals led by Green Mayors: Amsterdam, Budapest, Zagreb, Riga and Copenhagen.
“As our victories in these cities show, we continue to answer European’s desire for a Europe that protects people and the planet, by investing in clean energy, resilient infrastructure and fair, green economies. We want to build further on solutions that protect the people from heatwaves, droughts and wildfires. Our vision empowers those most at risk, ensuring climate justice and social justice go hand in hand', Cuffe concluded.
