Interesting facts about Warsaw

Did you know that...?

Warsaw was rebuilt almost entirely after World War II?

By 1945, around 85% of the city had been destroyed. The historic Old Town was painstakingly reconstructed using paintings, photographs, and architectural plans. Today, it is a UNESCO-listed example of a near-complete urban reconstruction.

To learn more about the history of Warsaw, make sure to visit Museum of Warsaw and Warsaw Uprising Museum.

Did you know that...?

Warsaw has been named one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the world in multiple years?

A city associated with sausage and herring is now a haven for plant-based foods. Warsaw has been ranked among the top vegan cities in the world by HappyCow (a vegan ranking website) for the past six years. In 2022, it was National Geographic’s number one vegan city in the world.

Polish vegan restaurants often offer a different insight into Poland – they are vibrant, alternative, and progressive. When in Warsaw, make sure to try traditional schabowy cutlet or famous pierogi in one of the vegan locations. Use HappyCow to navigate vegan Warsaw.

Did you know that...?

Warsaw is one of Europe's greenest capitals?

Almost half of the city is covered by green areas, including parks, forests, gardens, and riverbanks. The vast green spaces make Warsaw surprisingly nature-friendly for a capital city of nearly two million people.

Make sure to check out the Royal Baths (with the famous Fryderyk Chopin Monument), the Saxon Garden or Pole Mokotowskie.

Did you know that...?

Warsaw is home to one of Europe's last wild urban rivers?

The Vistula River flows through the city with largely natural banks, sandy beaches, and protected habitats. It attracts birds, beavers, and even occasional moose, all within the boundaries of a major European capital.

Did you know that...?

Warsaw contains a forest larger than many national parks in Europe?

Kabaty Forest covers more than 900 hectares within city limits and is popular for hiking, cycling, and wildlife spotting.

Did you know that...?

Warsaw has more than 160 years of public transport history?

Horse-drawn trams first appeared in the city in 1866. Today, Warsaw operates one of Central Europe's most extensive tram networks alongside its metro system.

Did you know that...?

A mermaid is the symbol of Warsaw?

The Syrenka (Mermaid of Warsaw) appears on the city's coat of arms and can be found in monuments throughout the city, for example, by the river bank of Vistula (here). According to legend, she vowed to protect Warsaw and its residents.
