On 7 October 2020, a landmark ruling condemning Golden Dawn, the Greek Nazi group turned political force, showed that EU Member States can fight against nazism and fascism with democratic tools. The largest trial against Nazis since the Nuremberg trial, found all 68 members of Golden Dawn guilty of having run or participated in a criminal organisation, not a political party.
This is an unprecedented victory for the European antifascist movement. They have sought to fight and defeat Golden Dawn through mass demonstrations against racism, and supporting refugees and migrants, but also through community-organising, awareness-raising and lawsuits against its criminal members.
Evelyne Huytebroeck, co-chair, and Vula Tsetsi, committee member of the European Green Party comment:
“It is a historical decision for democracy, we invite all democratic forces to be united and stay united in order to fight the extreme right forces, and marginalise them in the political scope.
As European Greens will always support and stand with individuals and groups fighting for an open and diverse society!”
Manolis Vemis, executive committee coordinator of the Greek Green Party adds:
“In an era where democracy is under attack from all fronts, the court decision has united all supporters of democracy in Greece. The ruling is an important recognition that comes after years of struggle from all democratic forces.
As Greens, along with all citizens who took the streets, we want to recall that no compromise can be made with democracy and justice. Nazi parties have no place in Greece or anywhere else.”
