As part of the European Greens, the Green Party of England and Wales has contributed to forming the position, including the two-state solution, throughout the years.
Yesterday, the Conference of the Green Party of England and Wales voted on a resolution called “Zionism is Racism.” The European Green Party leadership and several of our Member Parties have been in contact with the GPEW leadership beforehand in order to express our deep concern about it.
The resolution “Zionism is Racism” as voted yesterday goes against our agreed positions of the EGP and its Member Parties, therefore as EGP we unequivocally distance ourselves from it.
We condemn in the strongest terms the genocide against Palestinians and the human rights abuses committed by the current Israeli government and have consistently called for EU sanctions against Israel’s government.
Equally, the fight against antisemitism and for human rights is an essential part of our political agenda. At a time when antisemitic incidents and violent attacks are surging, it is of utmost importance to be absolutely unambiguous on this: Jewish people must be able to live free from discrimination and violence.
We have seen that many members of GPEW, including most of the MPs, have publicly spoken against the resolution and its content, shared posts, videos and personal declarations expressing their concerns. At the Conference, less than 1 per cent of the membership voted.
Therefore, as EGP we will immediately demand clarity from the leadership and parliamentary group of GPEW, to understand the official party policy of GPEW, how they position themselves towards the self-determination of Israeli and Jews as well as the protection of Jewish people and members in the party.
