Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party said:
"The vote marks a clear step forward in the fight for sexual and reproductive rights in Europe, despite fierce resistance from conservative and far-right forces, who tabled counter-proposals in an attempt to weaken or derail the initiative. Access to safe abortion is a fundamental right. It’s a matter of dignity, equality and personal freedom. Yet every year, thousands of women in Europe are forced to risk their lives or cross borders to access care that should be guaranteed to all’.
Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, added:
‘This is a very important step forward, and it proves that progressives can win when we unite our forces with citizens’ mobilisation. At the same time, the passing of an amendment pushed by conservative and far right-wing forces shows that reproductive rights remain under attack. The fight for rights, dignity and bodily autonomy must continue’.
The European Greens have been longstanding supporters of "My Voice, My Choice" and will continue to stand behind the initiative and its demand for the harmonisation of abortion laws across the EU.
