Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the EGP, said:
“The New Yorkers gave Zohran Mamdani a clear mandate for affordable housing, sensible transport choices, and climate policy for everyone. Mamdani’s victory is a beacon of hope for democracy that will be felt far beyond the United States. As cities come under pressure from authoritarian heads of state, New York stands out as a victory for grassroots organising and community representation. This is a good day for progressive politics and for challenging the view that ‘might is right’.”
Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, added:
“Zohran Mamdani’s campaign has shown that hope, courage and community organising can mobilise people and lead to real change. We strongly condemn Donald Trump’s undemocratic threats to withhold federal funds from New York. Trump’s attack on a democratically elected mayor echoes the tactics of Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, who has repeatedly tried to punish Budapest’s Green mayor, Gergely Karácsony, for his progressive stance. As European Greens, we will continue to fight for freedom, democracy, and climate justice. Guided by courage, we stand with all those resisting authoritarian intimidation, from Budapest and Belgrade to Istanbul and New York.”
