The European Green Party (EGP), as a pro-European and pro-democratic movement, is committed to fighting against the far-right, anti-European and populist regime of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
A second victory in Budapest by incumbent mayor Gergely Karácsony is an essential piece to achieve these pro-European and democratic objectives.
The decision of one of our member parties, Magyarország Zöld Pártja (LMP), to back Dávid Vitézy, a former state secretary in a Fidesz government, as a candidate for mayor, goes clearly against these objectives.
In light of these developments, the European Green Party unequivocally supports mayor Gergely Karácsony in the upcoming local elections and distances itself from LMP’s decision. As a precautionary measure, the EGP will suspend its political cooperation with LMP during the EU election campaign and will continue to monitor further developments.
