On the support of the European Green Party towards EQUO in view of the Spanish elections, November 20, 2011

The newly-born Spanish national Green Party EQUO has successfully gathered the 80,000 signatures requested to run in the forthcoming National Elections in Spain on 20th November. It will run in 43 out of the 48 districts in Spain. This is a historical moment and opportunity for the Greens in Spain.

We, the European Green Party, united in Congress on November 13, call upon all progressive and Green people in Spain to vote for EQUO.

EQUO is born with the will to change things, and with the belief that the time of traditional parties is over. The European Green Party fully supports this campaign as it represents a unique chance of a united Spanish Green Party to enter the Cortes.

What is EQUO

EQUO was launched in 2011 in Spain as a common political and social project bringing together green movements and individuals who share common objectives, such as economic, environmental and social sustainability, fight against climate change, and the defence of civil rights.

EQUO campaigns on three key topics: economy, democracy and sustainability. It calls for a green fiscal reform, installing the Tobin tax and canceling all fiscal heavens. The party also demands a truly participative democracy with total transparency of public decisions, zero tolerance for corruption, as well as an electoral reform making all votes equal.

EQUO calls for a change in the economic and production model towards a sustainable economy by reducing the ecological footprint. It aims at preserving human well-being and social equality, while drastically reducing carbon emissions and aiming at an energy model based on 100% renewables.

EQUO runs in full cooperation with EGP member party in Catalunya, ICV, they hope to form a parliamentary group together in the Spanish national Parliament, the Cortes. ICV strongly supports EQUO as its sole reliable partner to represent the unified Green voice in Spain.
