A necessity of referendum for the accession of Bulgaria to the EU

Bulgaria is at the brink of one of the most significant events in its 1300 year history. Bulgaria’s accession to the EU is pending. This event confirms not only Bulgaria’s cultural and geographic attribution to the family of the European states, but a high appreciation for the progress made in country’s democratization since post-1989 reforms. This has bee changes and establishment of market economy, for which Bulgarians had to pay a high cost.

Concurrently, the reluctance of the Bulgarian Government to legalize the accession to the EU in accordance with the best European traditions and in most democratic way, i.e. by referendum, causes serious concerns.

We cannot be sure in the real democratization of the country is no referendum for 15 years of democratic development has been held in Bulgaria, particularly on such a critical issue as Bulgaria’s membership in the EU.

We call on the members of the Bulgarian Parliament to support the initiative of the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov to hold a referendum on Bulgaria’s accession to the EU.
