European Greens have reiterated their call for an European Union-wide investigation into far right politicians accepting money from Russia at a European Parliament debate today.
Terry Reintke, lead candidate for the European Greens in the upcoming European elections, said:
"We have known for some time that many in the far right are doing Putin’s bidding. It now appears that some of them are doing so not only because they share his anti-democratic ideals, but because they are allegedly on his payroll and, if confirmed, selling out Europe’s democracy in order to fill their pockets."
"European democracy cannot be up for sale. We demand an urgent investigation into foreign interference, both in the European Parliament in European member states. Citizens have the right to know what exactly has happened and which politicians are involved."
The Czech and Belgian Prime Ministers announced on 28 March 2024 that investigations had uncovered a Moscow-led network around the website ‘Voice of Europe’ that paid several politicians to spread false narratives to undermine Ukraine, and influence the European Parliament and European elections. Government sources said the investigation had links to Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and Poland.
