'The Spanish government and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have taken a principled stance on the US-Israel attacks, as they lack a United Nations mandate and are positioned outside the framework of international law. The Spanish government's position is not ideological; it is grounded in the European values and the consistent defence of international law”, said Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party.
“Disagreements over foreign policy positions cannot justify economic retaliation against an EU Member State. The European Union is one single market, so economic threats to one country are threats to the entire EU bloc and will lead to European retaliation. We call on the EU institutions and Member States to present a coordinated and principled response. We regret the lack of European solidarity shown by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz when Trump verbally attacked Spain’, Vula Tsetsi said.
Co-chair of the European Green Party Ciarán Cuffe added: ‘Europe must speak with one common voice when the principles of international law are violated. The European Greens stand in full solidarity with the people and civil society in Iran who seek to make their country democratic and free. But this does not make the US-Israel attacks compliant with international law. On top of that, the contradictions between Trump’s and Rubio’s statements on the objectives show that there is no clear plan for the future of the people in Iran - even the US administration’s goals are changing all the time’.
