“Donald Trump’s threat against Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark, is irresponsible and dangerous,” the new co-chairs of the European Green Party, Vula Tsetsi and Ciarán Cuffe, said.
President-elect Donald Trump yesterday evening left open the use of military force to take over Greenland an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO member.
European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi reacted: “Trump’s statements regarding Greenland, Panama, and Canada are imperialistic—another step in his nationalist ‘America First’ ideology. Like in his first term, he continues to actively undermine global multilateral organizations and agreements that have helped reduce military conflicts in Europe since 1945. Trump stands contrary to the European Greens on all of our core values and policies—from climate action to the rule of law, from global solidarity to equal rights. We stand ready to join forces with other progressive movements worldwide to counter the rising tide of right-wing populism, from Trump in the United States to his allies such as Viktor Orbán and Giorgia Meloni in Europe and beyond.”
Ciarán Cuffe, European Green Party co-chair, added: “We are proud of our Europe—a Europe that protects its people from plutocrats and oligarchs. A second Trump term is a moment for European leaders to show unity and strength in the face of a demagogue who threatens democracy and multilateral institutions including NATO and the United Nations. We Greens will relentlessly defend international cooperation and institutions that bring countries together to solve global challenges peacefully. The future of Greenland is up to its people, not to Trump. While Trump claims that he wants to protect Greenland from Russia and China, it is clear that he is driven by economic interests, as Greenland has vast reserves of rare minerals, gas, and oil. Trump’s campaign was heavily financed by the fossil fuel industry.”
