The fall of the Barnier government puts the crucial political question on 'which way to turn' back in the camp of Macron’s party.
Mélanie Vogel, European Green Party co-chair and member of EELV Les Ecologistes in the French Senate, reacts: “It is outrageous that Prime Minister Michel Barnier pleaded for the support of the far-right National Rally faction of Marine Le Pen, rather than looking for stability with the democratic and progressive forces."
The Green group in the French parliament has put on the table a proposal for a government that, on big priorities, is capable of finding a majority in the democratic camp – known in France as the “republican front”, meaning those refusing to collaborate with the far right. This government should prepare the next elections, which should be held under proportional representation.
Mélanie Vogel: “The French Greens are clearly ready for this. The big political question now is directed at the members of French President Macron’s camp: What do they oppose most? The political orientation of the New Popular Front, or the far right? If the Macron camp wants it, it is possible to get France out of the chaos, and to end the erosion of its democracy.”
The European Green Party gives its full support to the New Popular Front (NFP), the alliance in which the French Greens of Les Ecologistes play a major role.
EGP co-chair Thomas Waitz concluded: “The French Greens campaign for social justice, climate ambition, and strengthening democracy and public freedoms. They offer an alternative to the government controlled by the far right. Let us not forget that, at the last French elections in June, 65% of the French voted for democratic parties and values.”
