"After four years of hard right-wing policies - with a government majority that depended on the far right for the first time in history - Sweden has voted for change. This is good news for Europe. It's time for a red-green government with ambition to reduce inequalities and take the climate crisis seriously. We also note that the Greens have broken their membership record a few days before the elections, with over 20,000 members. We warmly welcome all new volunteers in the Green movement," said European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe.
"The Greens increased their number of MPs from 18 to 22, gained ground in 250 out of Sweden's 290 municipalities, and entered several new regional councils. At the same time, the far-right lost ground for the first time in almost 40 years. The message of the voters is clear: they want a more equal Sweden that puts in place a just, green transition,” said European Green Party Committee member Rasmus Nordqvist. "The growth of the Swedish Greens follows other Green successes in Norway and Denmark in the last 12 months and shows a desire for alternatives to cuts in public services, climate inaction and social exclusion. The Greens represent this alternative."
