The Green delegation includes a Minister, Members of the European Parliament, national Members of Parliaments and party leaders. This international Green presence underscores both solidarity with Hungary’s LGBTQI+ community and broader opposition to creeping authoritarianism in Europe.
Vula Tsetsi, European Green Party Co‑Chair, emphasized: “We thank Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony (Párbeszéd – A Zöldek Pártja) for officially designating Budapest Pride a municipal event, shielding it from Prime Minister Orbán’s attempts to marginalize, silence, or ban this peaceful demonstration. Freedom of assembly is a fundamental right - and Mayor Karácsony's action provides crucial institutional backing that counters efforts to suppress the freedom of speech for the Pride protesters and beyond.”
European Green Party Co-Chair Ciarán Cuffe added: “Orbán’s shock‑troop tactics and repression are far from reflecting the views of most Hungarians. Our presence is a clear message: we stand with all who fight for democratic freedoms, LGBTQI+ rights, and the rule of law in Hungary.”
Párbeszéd - A Zöldek Pártja became a member of the European Green Party in 2023. Last month, when the European Green Party welcomed Mayor Karácsony to Brussels Pride, he called upon the audience to come to Budapest, as resistance against authoritarian encroachment on fundamental civil rights must be collective.
This weekend’s delegation includes Ernest Urtasun (Spain’s Green Minister of Culture), Yolanda Díaz (Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain and party leader of Sumar), Felix Banaszak (German Greens co-leader), 20 Green MEPs and numerous Green MPs and party members.
