The European Green Party welcomes the news that Nicolae Ștefănuță will be running at the upcoming European Parliament elections and that voters in Romania will have a progressive and Green candidate to vote for on 9 June 2024.
Despite the excessive administrative hurdles, Ștefănuță has managed to gather an impressive 110,420 signatures which will enable him to run at the upcoming European Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.
Mélanie Vogel, co-chair of the European Green Party said: “We are extremely proud to support Nicolae Ștefănuță in the EU elections. For one year now, he has been a very strong voice in our Group in the European Parliament, working tirelessly in favour of Green policies, fundamental rights, democracy and social justice.
“The mobilisation that he managed to build around his candidacy, despite such strict rules - the strictest in the entire EU - sent a very powerful political message. It showed that Romanian citizens want to have a green, social, democratic and feminist option to vote for on 9 June. Today, thanks to this amazing grassroot mobilisation campaign, they will have it.”
Ștefănuță is fighting against gender-based violence, he is advocating for affordable and accessible public transport, increasing the green areas in cities, access to mental healthcare, more funding for the Erasmus+ programme, as well as youth and LGBTQI+ rights.
