Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said: “This referendum was a test for Giorgia Meloni’s government - and the Italians have delivered her a clear political defeat. This victory for democracy shows that her attacks on the rule of law and the separation of powers will not be tolerated. It’s an encouraging and important signal of growing resistance across Europe against the attempts of Trump friends Meloni and Orbán to weaken democratic institutions.’
Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party added: “Meloni is one of the best political friends of Trump - she was the only European state leader attending his inauguration one year ago. But now Trump’s policies fuel an economic crisis with higher export tariffs and skyrocketing oil prices, the Europeans are paying the price - and they are pushing back against the circle of friends of Trump in Europe.’
The European Green Party highlights the role of its member party Europa Verde, which has consistently defended democratic institutions, judicial independence and constitutional balance throughout this process.
