Responding to the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s endorsement of Viktor Orbán in the upcoming Hungarian parliamentary elections in April, the co-chairs of the European Green Party said:
“Orbán is so desperate to cling on to power that he is using his US allies to maintain his authoritarianism. Together, they seek to weaken the EU, undermine the rule of law, and normalize authoritarianism in Europe. The Hungarian people and only the Hungarian people, must decide the direction their country will take,” said Vula Tsetsi, EGP Co-Chair.
“Hungary is more than its current government. Cities like Budapest, under the leadership of Green Mayor Gergely Karácsony, demonstrate that there is a strong, democratic, Europe-focused alternative in the country. The upcoming elections are a chance for Hungarians to return to pluralism, the rule of law and transparency. We stand firmly with all those in Hungary and across Europe who defend democracy. Hungary’s and indeed, Europe’s future can only be determined by its people,” said Ciaran Cuffe, EGP Co-Chair.
