Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said: “Trump’s attempt to blackmail European countries by imposing tariffs shows he is ignoring international rules, reason, and respect for allies. His messaging to the Norwegian Prime Minister linking a failure to be awarded a Nobel Peace prize with his aggression towards Greenland is a matter of significant concern. The EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument exists for precisely this situation: to counter economic blackmail from abroad, ensuring a united European response. EU countries must push back hard and call on the European Commission to immediately activate the Anti-Coercion Instrument.’
Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party said: 'When trade and tariffs are used as weapons, Europe must respond with power, not politeness. Trump’s pressure on Greenland is coercion, not diplomacy, and it denies Greenland’s people the right to decide their own future. At this week’s European Council, leaders must stop hedging and activate the EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument to draw a clear red line against Trump’s imperial agenda. Europe either acts together now, or shows it can be bullied. We will be watching closely which side Trump’s allies inside the EU choose.’
