Along with the Femke Halsema (GroenLinks), Mayor of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Gergely Karácsony (Párbeszéd – A Zöldek Pártja), Mayor of Budapest, Hungary, as well as this month’s re-election of Tomislav Tomašević (Možemo! – politička platforma) as Mayor of Zagreb, Croatia, no fewer than four European capitals are now led by Greens.
European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi warmly congratulated Progresīvie, member of the European Green Party, on this important breakthrough: “These successive victories signal a strong voter appetite for progressive, pragmatic governance in Europe. Greens are delivering for their communities. This victory means that close to 4 million Europeans will be living under Green mayoral leadership in national capitals.”
European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe said: “This is also a win for democracy, equality, and pragmatic, progressive governance. People across Central and North Eastern Europe are choosing leaders who prioritise social justice, transparency, and the climate. The Progresīvie-led coalition in Riga will be a dam against far-right populists who pander to Russia.”
Progresīvie joined the European Green Party in 2022. After their electoral success in the national election, they joined the Latvian government in September 2023.
