European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe stated: “Mayor Gergely Karácsony has become a symbol of democratic resistance in Hungary. When the Orbán regime attempted to block Budapest Pride this year, he took immediate action, declaring it a municipal event and ensuring that it could go ahead safely. His message was clear: Budapest stands for love, freedom and democracy - and will not be silenced.”
European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi added: "Six weeks before Budapest Pride, Gergely Karácsony visited the Brussels Pride at the invitation of the European Green Party to rally support for Budapest Pride. His call for solidarity was met with enthusiasm across Europe - and rightly honoured today in the goosebump moment in the European Parliament. Gergely and his team deserved this applause. He has shown what it means to stand up to authoritarianism and defend European values. Karácsony’s party, Dialogue - The Greens' Party (Párbeszéd – A Zöldek Pártja), joined the European Green Party in 2023. We are proud to count him as part of our political family."
