Ahead of the European Council taking place in Brussels tomorrow, Green leaders issued a statement criticising EU leaders’ abandonment of environmental and climate policies in the ‘strategic agenda’ which they are set to adopt for the next five years.
Terry Reintke, lead candidate of the European Greens said: "By undoing the Green Deal, European leaders are abdicating their responsibility. A clear commitment to redouble the ambitions of the Green Deal is essential to meet the challenges we face. As Greens we have the courage to invest in our green and social future for energy independence, for food security and for a future-proof economy.”
Bas Eickhout, lead candidate of the European Greens, added: "A prosperous and competitive Europe can only be secured by redoubling our commitment to a climate-safe economy that works for everyone. Otherwise we risk reversing recent hard-won progress for our citizens, jobs and economy. And we lose the opportunity to develop an autonomous energy system based on solar and wind energy that would make us independent from authoritarian regimes."
