Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the European Green Party said:
'Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its future can only be decided by its people, in full respect of international law. The language used by US president Donald Trump mirrors the discourse employed by Putin on Crimea and Donbas prior to its illegal attack on Ukraine. History shows where such imperialistic rhetoric leads. Reverting to the so-called “law of the strongest” undermines international security and makes the world less safe for everyone.
Also, a NATO member attacking another NATO member would obviously lead to the end of NATO. Trump's statements are unacceptable and require a clear, calm and firm response. Yesterday’s suggestion from the US Government’s press secretary that ‘utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal’ is dangerous and inflammatory rhetoric. The European Green Party supports the approach taken by the Danish government and the Government of Greenland.'
Vula Tsetsi, co-chair of the European Green Party said:
‘Greenland is not a bargaining chip, and its future is not for sale. Threats of military force have no place in Europe and no place in the 21st century. While the joint declaration by European leaders and the Danish Prime Minister is a necessary first step, it must urgently be followed by a clear, united and uncompromising EU position in full defence of Greenland’s sovereignty and self-determination.
Donald Trump’s threats are not just irresponsible, they strike at the very foundations of the multilateral system built after the devastation of the First and Second World Wars. The European Union was created precisely to end the logic of power politics, imperialism and territorial intimidation. The EU has a duty to defend international law and stand unequivocally with the people of Greenland. This is not only about Greenland, it is about the future of Europe itself.’
One year ago, the European Greens already warned that Trump's threats against Greenland were madness, and in December 2025 condemned that the US National Security Strategy targets the European project.
