"Over the past two years, Serbia’s students have led an unprecedented mobilisation, bringing together a broad coalition across society. They have shown extraordinary courage and determination while keeping their movement democratic, inclusive and open. Their success sends a powerful message: when people unite for justice, freedom and accountability, their voices cannot be ignored.
Now, Europe must stand with the people of Serbia. We call on the European Union to support the rebuilding of the rule of law, the restoration of democratic institutions and the fight against corruption. Serbia needs a credible and accelerated path towards EU accession, backed by genuine democratic reforms. For the European Greens, Serbia belongs in the European Union.
The defeats of Orbán and now Vučić send an important message across Europe: people who have experienced authoritarian leadership know what is at stake when democracy is undermined. They choose freedom, dignity and democratic accountability.
This is a lesson for everyone in Europe, especially those considering voting for the far right: authoritarianism is not inevitable, and democracy must never be taken for granted.
Serbia’s people have made their choice. Europe must listen and act."
Background
The European Green Party has stood alongside Serbia's democratic movement throughout the protests, with Vula Tsetsi repeatedly challenging Vučić's attacks on protesters and democratic actors since September 2025. The party will continue to work with its Serbian member party, the Green-Left Front, and other democratic partners to support the country's democratic renewal and European future.
