Ciarán Cuffe, Co-Chair of the European Green Party said “Serbia belongs in Europe. President Vučić may be looking to authoritarian regimes elsewhere for support, but we are determined to see the day when we welcome Serbia as a member of the European Union.”
“We saw last weekend that when given a choice, Hungarians living under Orban’s ‘electoral autocracy’, chose Europe. Serbians living under the Vučić regime deserve the opportunity to decide the same. That is why we support the opposition's and students' calls for elections to be held without delay. And when they happen, we will be here to help make sure that they are free and fair.”
Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the European Green Party, said “The European Union must stop funding a government that is dismantling democracy. EU money is meant to strengthen democratic institution, not to enable a regime that undermines them.”
“There must be consequences. President Aleksandar Vučić is attacking peaceful protesters, undermining the independence of the judiciary, restricting media freedom, and weakening democratic institutions. Europe cannot stay silent. The European Union must stand with Serbian citizens and civil society defending democracy. By continuing to shield his Serbian Progressive Party, the European People’s Party is complicit in the dismantling of democracy in Serbia. This must end now.”
“President Vučić needs to understand that there are consequences to attacking peaceful protestors, and undermining Serbian democracy with similar violence. European conservatives in the European People’s Party are allowing him to get away with it scott free. The EPP must urgently exclude his SNS party and stop dragging their feet.”
