The European Green Party congratulates the Greens/EFA MEP Nicolae Ștefănuță on his election result in Romania as an independent member of the European Parliament. The European Green Party is closely monitoring the election process in Romania following reports of irregularities at polling stations.
With an amazing grassroots mobilisation campaign, Greens/EFA MEP Nicolae Ștefănuță managed to collect an impressive 110,420 signatures, which allowed him to overcome the administrative hurdles and stand as an independent candidate in the EU elections.
Yesterday's European elections coincided with local elections in Romania, and irregularities were reported, such as the lack of ballot papers in university towns to allow non-resident citizens to vote in the European elections.
European Green Party co-chair Mélanie Vogel said: "Every vote counts, and every young person's vote counts. We urge the Romanian authorities to ensure a democratic electoral process, with votes counted according to the law in every polling station in Romania''.
Mélanie Vogel added: "We are very proud to support Nicolae Ștefănuță in the EU elections. For a year now, he has been a very strong voice in our group in the European Parliament, working tirelessly for Green policies, fundamental rights, democracy and social justice. We look forward to having Nicolae in our Green family in the European Parliament for another five years and we are proud to have a progressive and Green Romanian partner working closely with us for a better Europe for all".
Nicolae Ștefănuță fights against gender-based violence and advocates for affordable and accessible public transport, more green spaces in cities, access to mental health care, LGBTQI+ rights and more funding for the Erasmus+ programme, and youth rights.
