The European Green Party has reiterated its unambiguous support for the list of Vesna – Green Party (VESNA – zelena stranka), led by Vladimir Prebilič, for the European Parliament elections in Slovenia.
Mélanie Vogel, co-chair of the European Green Party said: “The list of Vesna features excellent candidates with a proven track record in their professional fields, in Slovenian civil society and in municipal politics. Their programme builds and expands upon the work of the European Green Party in the European Parliament, national parliaments and governments in other European states. Therefore, I am happy to wholeheartedly recommend them to Slovenian voters. ”
Thomas Waitz, co-chair of the European Green Party added: “An incumbent liberal Member of the European Parliament, Klemen Grošelj, is currently trying to get reelected by instrumentalizing a political party called “Greens of Slovenia” (Zeleni Slovenije). This is a cynical attempt by a sitting liberal MEP, rejected by his own party, to keep his seat. With the exception of the colour in their name, there is nothing Green about the Grošelj’s list Greens of Slovenia. Let me be clear - the Greens of Slovenia (Zeleni Slovenije) of Andrej Čuš are not, and have never been affiliated with the European Green Party”.
The fact that MEP Grošelj’s sudden change of heart leads him to lead the EP list of the Greens of Slovenia (Zeleni Slovenije), led by its president, Andrej Čuš, a person who took up the office of State Secretary in the latest government of Janez Janša, and to a party that participated in the 2022 Slovenian parliamentary election in a right-wing coalition featuring several former MPs of Janez Janša’s party, further hugely diminishes the credibility of this list.
European Greens’ Leading Candidate Bas Eickhout visited Slovenia on 8-9 May 2024 to bring the European Green Party’s campaign to Slovenia together with its Member Party, Vesna – Green Party (VESNA – zelena stranka).
