Croatian citizens were called to the voting booths on July 5th to elect their new parliament. The Green-Left coalition - Zeleno–lijeva koalicija including EGP candidate member ORaH - will for the first time ever enter the Croatian parliament, after securing a remarkable seven seats. The coalition did particularly well in Zagreb, where it gained over 20% of the votes.
Thomas Waitz, co-chair of the European Green Party and MEP comments:
“We congratulate the Green-Left coalition for their historic result! This will be a major game changer in Croatian politics, as the coalition represents civil society, anti-corruption activists, environmentalists and representatives of the social movement. The result shows clearly that change and a new kind of politics is possible, based on inclusive values, sustainable policies, and citizen participation both in Croatia and the wider Balkan region.
The Green-Left coalition will work hard to ensure that the investments for the recovery from the COVID-19 crisis are made in a way that serves future generations and tackles the climate crisis, poverty and unemployment in Croatia.”
Tomislav Tomasevic, spitzenkandidat of the green left coalition and leader of party Mozemo commented after results were published:
“We will do our best to make this country better because we can do that. They said three years ago you cannot get into Zagreb city assembly - we showed them we can! They told us after that you cannot shake the mayor of Zagreb with only four councilors - we showed them we can! And they told us two months ago you cannot get into Croatian Parliament - we showed them we can!
Zorislav Antun Petrovic, president of ORaH added:
“Our goal was to win three mandates, we were hoping to get five and seven is like getting into the World Cup finals. This is the first time green MPs got elected to Croatian parliament.”
