Reacting to the news that Sisse Marie Welling of the Danish Green Left party has been elected as the new mayor of Copenhagen, European Green Party co-chair Ciarán Cuffe said:
‘With Sisse Marie Welling, Copenhagen will have a Lord Mayor determined to make Copenhagen affordable for its residents. The Green Left has been a member of the European Green Party family since 2014. The European Green family is now proud to count five mayors of European capital cities amongst its members, since Riga (Latvia), Amsterdam (the Netherlands), Budapest (Hungary) and Zagreb (Croatia) were already led by Green mayors. We warmly congratulate Sisse Marie and the Green Left, with their impressive 17.9% of the vote across Denmark’.
European Green Party co-chair Vula Tsetsi also applauds Sisse Marie Welling and the Green Left: "The Green Left ran a successful campaign centred on housing, family policy and green development. The Green Left’s historic victory shows that there is a demand from voters for truly progressive governance. Copenhagen has been continuously led by Social Democratic lord mayors since 1938, but today’s victory in Copenhagen is part of a trend in European capital cities. The Greens are delivering for their communities. This victory means that more than 4,5 million Europeans will now live under Green mayoral leadership in national capitals’.
The Green Left (SF) has been a member of the European Green Party since 2014. The member parties of the European Green Party already included four mayors: Viesturs Kleinbergs of Progresīvie has been Mayor of Riga, Latvia since June 2025. Femke Halsema of GroenLinks is Mayor of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Gergely Karácsony (Párbeszéd – A Zöldek Pártja) is Mayor of Budapest, Hungary. Tomislav Tomašević (Možemo! – Politička platforma) is the Mayor of Zagreb, Croatia.
