🗺️ Getting to Lisbon
By Plane ✈️
Lisbon Airport (LIS) is the city’s main international gateway, just 3 km from the FIL Meeting Centre.
- Metro: From the airport, take the Red Line (direct, approx. 10 minutes) to Oriente Station, which is a short 5-minute walk from the venue.
- Bus: Several city buses link the airport to Oriente Station.
- Taxi / Ride apps: A taxi or Uber/Bolt ride from the airport to FIL takes around 5–10 minutes.
By Train 🚆
For those travelling within Portugal or from Spain, trains arrive at Oriente Station, Lisbon’s modern hub for national and international rail. The station is directly connected to the Red Line metro and is within 5 minutes’ walking distance of the FIL Meeting Centre.
By Bus 🚌
Long-distance buses (FlixBus, ALSA, Rede Expressos) also arrive at Oriente Station, making FIL accessible within a short walk.
By Ferry & Train (Eco-Friendly Routes) ⛴️
While Lisbon does not have direct international ferry links, it is possible to reach Portugal by combining ferry and train travel:
From the UK or Ireland, ferries to northern Spain or France (e.g. Santander, Bilbao, Roscoff) can be paired with train journeys down to Lisbon.
From the Venue to Lisbon City Centre 🏛️ → 🌆
The FIL Meeting Centre is well connected to the rest of the city:
- Metro: From Oriente Station (Red Line), transfer to the Green or Blue Lines at Alameda or São Sebastião for direct access to the historic centre (Baixa, Rossio, Chiado). Total journey: 20–25 minutes.
- Train: Suburban trains from Oriente also stop at Rossio Station in the city centre (approx. 20 minutes).
- Taxi / Ride-hailing: Around 15–20 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
- Bus: Multiple bus lines connect Oriente with central Lisbon, but metro or train is usually faster.
How to navigate Lisbon?
Lisbon has a compact, well-connected public transport network, making it easy to move between the FIL Meeting Centre and the rest of the city.
Metro 🚇
- Fastest option for moving around Lisbon.
- Four lines (Blue, Green, Yellow, Red) cover most of the city.
- Oriente Station (Red Line) is the closest stop to the FIL.
- Tickets: Available at machines in stations. A rechargeable Viva Viagem card (€0.50) can be loaded with single tickets, day passes, or stored credit.
Trains 🚆
- Oriente Station links to suburban, national, and international trains.
- Useful for trips to Cascais, Sintra, and other Portuguese cities.
Buses & Trams 🚌 🚋
- Extensive bus network fills in gaps where the metro does not reach.
- Lisbon’s iconic trams (notably line 28 through Alfama) are popular for sightseeing.
- Both are included in day passes loaded on the Viva Viagem card.
Taxis & Ride-apps 🚖
- Taxis are widely available and relatively affordable.
- Apps such as Uber, Bolt, and Free Now operate across the city.
Walking & Cycling 🚶♀️🚴
- Central Lisbon is walkable but often steep, with cobblestone streets.
- Gira bike-sharing stations and e-scooters (Bolt, Lime, Bird) are available in most districts.
- Parque das Nações (where the venue is located) is flat and particularly good for walking and cycling.
