Debate on women's rights by EGP, Bucharest, Romania.

This debate will spark a collective dialogue on European and Romanian Women’s Rights and Safety.

The theme of the debate is feminist policies, with an important focus on access to reproductive health, sexual education, abortion & domestic abuse.

Mélanie Vogel, European Green Party Co-Chair and Senator from France is touring around Europe to share her experience. Earlier this year, the French Senate approved a law based on an initiative by Vogel to have the right to abortion enshrined in the French constitution.

European Greens are and always have been, strong on abortion rights. It is in our European Election manifesto, and we want the next European Parliament mandate to have this taken up in the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Greens want to show women in countries where this is not a given, that there is broad support. This event in Romania is part of a tour Vogel is currently doing across countries like Belgium, France, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy and Spain to discuss these issues with stakeholders and policy makers.

In Romania, the landscape of women's rights is deteriorating. As per the Asociația Moașelor Independente (Association of Independent Midwives in Bucharest), 80% of public hospitals in the country are now refusing to perform abortions, severely compromising women's access to essential reproductive healthcare. Additionally, Centrul Filia, a prominent Romanian NGO, has documented a surge of over 50% in reported cases of women facing domestic abuse over the past five years.

With this important debate, we aim to have a space where we can talk about the European and Romanian reality and create a productive dialogue about finding solutions in Europe and Romania to fight for women’s right.

This panel discussion wants to highlight a short discourse of the speakers, create a dialogue between the panelists, and most important: start meaningful conversations with the participants at the event.
