Bas Eickhout

As one of the two European Green Party’s leading candidates for the 2024 European Parliament elections, Bas Eickhout stands for climate protection and democratic values. His journey with the Green Party reflects a deep commitment to the party’s core values of sustainability, social justice, and a more democratic Europe.

From 6 to 9 June 2024, we will elect a new European Parliament – and Bas Eickhout is one of our two leading candidates. Entering the European Parliament in 2009 for the Dutch Green party GroenLinks, Bas Eickhout quickly established himself as an important voice for climate action. His expertise as an environmental scientist has been instrumental in shaping legislation, earning him a reputation as a knowledgeable and effective advocate for ecological issues.

“I WILL CAMPAIGN FOR A GREEN, SOCIALLY JUST EUROPE THAT CHERISHES ITS DIVERSITY AND STANDS FOR AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY FOR ALL. TOGETHER WE CAN BEAT INEQUALITY AND INJUSTICE”

His leadership skills were particularly evident during negotiations on the European Green Deal, where his ability to bridge differences and build consensus marked him out as a respected figure in the European political landscape.

“Only together can we fight our global challenges and only together can we beat inequalities and injustice.”

His professional background as an environmental scientist has deeply influenced his understanding of these issues. He studied Chemistry and Environmental Science and worked as a researcher at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving). He co-authored the IPCC report on climate change which received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

“The green transition will only succeed when it goes hand in hand with a socially just transition.”

Bas Eickhout’s core beliefs centre around a Europe that harmonizes sustainability with economic growth. He advocates for policies that address climate change and ensure economic opportunity for all Europeans. He envisions a Europe that leads the world in green technology and renewable energy and that safeguards the planet for future generations while ensuring justice and opportunity for its people today.
