Conference on the future of Europe - with MEP Daniel Freund
Despite increased turnout, the new President-elect of the EU Commission was not chosen among the lead candidates running in the May European elections. In foreign policy, taxation and the EU budget, Europe's ability to act is often blocked because of unanimity requirements - decisions can be blocked by individual Member States. In order to find lasting solutions for these and other questions, the new EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has suggested a conference on the future of Europe in her work programme. Over the next two years 2020-2022, this conference should clarify how we can make Europe more democratic, closer to its citizens, more efficient and more social.
The conference could bring us closer to our Green visions for the future of Europe but could also be a missed opportunity. The designated Commissioner responsible for the conference, Dubravka Šuica, did not convince us in her hearing. She remained very vague, talking above all about listening to citizens and striving for a cloudy "commitment of the institutions to the citizens". How can we make this conference inclusive and relevant? Join the workshop to debate your ideas on how the conference should work, how to best organise citizen participation, what questions the conference should answer and what issues should be on its agenda.
Input and moderation: MEP Daniel Freund, Greens/EFA representative in the European Parliament’s WG on the conference (responsible to draft a position on composition, mandate and methods) and Greens/EFA Coordinator in the European Parliament’s Constitutional Affairs committee (AFCO).
