Plenary session: 1 year after Dieselgate - From Brussels to the local level, how Greens can fight for better air quality

Dieselgate shocked the European public one year ago. After Volkswagen admitted it had cheated NOx emission tests, national and European inquiries showed that most of the cars on EU roads emitted much higher emissions than allowed by European law. Consumers are fooled both ways: they drive much dirtier cars than they thought, and they breathe highly polluted air. Politicians all over Europe promised better and reliable tests, cleaner cars and less pollution.

But what has changed one year later? The Green MEPs Karima Delli and Bas Eickhout will give an overview of the legislation currently on the table in Brussels: a new design for the Real Driving Emissions tests, a proposal for a European type approval mechanism and the work of the inquiry committee EMIS. Progress is possible, but the car lobby is working hard to make the new rules weak.

Together with Silke Gebel and Monica Oltra Jarque, representatives from the local level, the MEPs want to discuss what would be important to make our cars and the air in our cities cleaner:

  • How to improve car emission regulation so that cities can meet EU air quality standards?
  • How to build bridges between Green actions at local and EU level to fight for cleaner air?
  • How to ensure a match between the local air quality plans and the EU targets, with a special focus on private mobility measures, mainly cars?

Moderator: Francesco Ferrante, Vice-President of the Kyoto Club

Speakers:

  • Karima Delli, Green Member of the European Parliament, France
  • Bas Eickhout, Green Member of the European Parliament, Netherlands
