Europe & Democracy

Empowering citizens while improving transparency and the rule of law in a European Union of and for the people.

We constantly work to develop a Europe that is up to the global challenges we face in the twenty-first century. Finding a solution can only be done by listening to the concerns and hopes of citizens.

Europe is more than just the European institutions. It is all of us, irrelevant of where we come from, where we are going, what we like, who we love, and who we want to be. We are united in diversity, based on our common European values of freedom, solidarity and democracy.

The European Union was created to guarantee peace and promote prosperity for its citizens. It has established supranational institutions, developed a permanent cooperation between our nations and functions as an anchor of stability, unparalleled in European history. It gives hope to many citizens inside the EU as well as in neighbouring countries.

As Greens, we believe in the need of an ever-closer Union, and we want to make it more democratic, relevant and useful to citizens. That is why we want the EU to reset, to change its policies and priorities towards a Green New Deal, to reform and democratise its decision-making process to make it less dependent on Member States, and closer to its citizens.

We are therefore against back-room negotiations that marginalize the European Parliament and exclude national parliaments, the media and the public, as with every such deal EU citizens continue to lose trust in the European project. The European Green Party was the first European party to be established in 2004 and the first to introduce a primary process to select its leading candidates for a European election. This demonstrates that we don't just talk European democracy. We live it!
