Before becoming a minister in Saarland, Simone Peter was biologist for the European Associatoin for Renewable Energy (Eurosolar) and worked for the Agenc for Renewable Energy. She gained more experience in energy policy during her time as spokeswoman for the Federal Working Group on Energy from 2003 to 2004. From 2009 to 2012 she was Minister for the Environment, Transport and Energy in Saarland, and after that she was vice-chair of the Saarland parliament.
Peter has been a member of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen since 1996. In 2010 she became a member of the executive board in Saarland, and in 2012 she became the chair of Kreisverband Saarbrücken.
Simone Peter is married and has a son.
