In 2000 Angelo Bonelli was elected to the Regional Council of Lazio, where he fought their battles on a regional scale. Member of the Commission for the fight against crime, he took 2 arson attacks to his house and to his car.
In 2005 he was re-elected in the regional council and became Minister for Environment and Cooperation of the Lazio Region, a post from which he resigned after his election to the Chamber of Deputies in 2006. In the XV Legislature he is a member of the Transport Commission and is leader of the Greens in the House. Bonelli remains in office for 18 months, during the Prodi government.
In 2012, upholding an appeal launched by the group of associations and environmental committees that are headed by "Clean Air for Taranto", Bonelli accepts to run for mayor of Taranto, a city declared by the Ministry of the Environment "area of high environmental risk" already in in 1991. Bonelli obtained 12% of the votes with a historic affirmation of the environmental front.
In addition to environmental issues Angelo Bonelli is very attentive to issues related to the politics of cooperation and defense of indigenous peoples threatened by deforestation. He has worked extensively in cooperation projects, particularly in Amazonia.
Angelo Bonelli is the party leader of the Federazione dei Verdi (Italy).
