Dear Green friends,
After the elections in September, the Swedish Green Party entered into government with the Social Democrats. We did this under difficult circumstances. We formed a minority government that wasn’t even able to obtain a majority with the support of the Left Party. Therefore, we declared from the outset that we wanted to cooperate with any of the four former centre-right government parties (the Alliance); an invitation that was ignored.
The xenophobic right-wing party Sweden Democrats has proclaimed that it intends to help overthrow any minority party in future unless their immigration unfriendly policies are taken into account. To avoid this, there is a need for us in the other parties to cooperate across the party blocs. A broad majority of the Swedish people has voted for parties that stand up for the equal value of all.
On December 3, the Sweden Democrats voted in favour of the budget proposal of the Alliance. This was a breach of the practice in parliament. The Alliance parties still were not interested in cooperating, and therefore there was really no other option for Prime Minister Löfvén than to call for an extra election. This will formally be called on December 29 and held on March 22.
The Swedish Green Party is filled with fighting spirit ahead of the coming election campaign, ready to fight for a modern Sweden where our children’s future is more important than tax cuts, both as the environment and their education is concerned. We will fight for a Sweden that always stands up for openness, humanitarianism and the equal value of all. With a record number of 19 000 members, we have never been stronger and we are more ready than ever!
