Commenting on the NATO summit taking place in Brussels today, European Green Party co-chair Reinhard Bütikofer said:
"The elephant is the heraldic animal of the US Republican Party. But of all the Republican US presidents that have visited Brussels in the past, none have evoked so much anxiety that the proverbial elephant would create a major disaster in the china shop as President Trump is doing presently.
"Trump's inclination towards improvised diplomatic maneuvers, many of which have not turned out to be extremely diplomatic after all, is indeed scaring.
"NATO is as it seems much more scared than the EU because it is more dependent on the US. Nobody should fool themselves though. Even if all Europeans put up the most amenable show they can, Trump might still not be willing to play ball. Almost to the contrary, he has so far shown the least respect for those that were too much afraid to stand up for their own interest and to push back when necessary. Maybe all the European leaders should learn from Pope Francis and just bring a good book for The Donald."
