Today, 22 February marks our 14th anniversary as the European Green Party and 34th anniversary if we include our previous incarnations as the ‘European Federation of Green Parties’ and before that the 'European Green Coordinatination.'
Borne out of a shared ambition for a new kind of politics, Green parties have put the health of our planet at its core so that future generations have the opportunity to live fulfilling and meaningful lives in a sustainable world. We are now proud to boast 44 member parties from across Europe and beyond.
Looking back, we can see how far we have come. After 20 years as an expanding federation, we became a political party at the Fourth Congress of the European Federation of Green Parties in the historic city of Rome. Our first goal was to focus on the 2004 European Parliament elections. It was a time of high-hopes and soaring ambition as the foundations of a more united Europe started to take shape.
Since its inception, the European Green Party has grown in strength and confidence by building structures that can adequately amplify the political expression of its Member Parties. Hard graft, care, and a creative mindset has resulted in a political entity capable of crafting common policy positions, mutual election manifestos and uniformity in European election campaigns.
We are thankful for the dedication, sweat - and occasional tears - of Green veterans across Europe who have fought to keep Green issues firmly on Europe’s political agenda. Without them, we are convinced the world would be in a more parlous state. We also appreciate the vote of confidence from the European Parliament, which has opened the way for funding for Europe-wide parties like our own.
At the tender age of 14, we have crossed many important milestones as a political party. On the eve of the 2019 political campaign, we are confident that many more challenges lie ahead. Thank you for your belief in the potential of a pan-European project, and we look forward to continue working together for a Greener and better Europe.
In 2004 we created a European Green Party because we were convinced that the only way to build a better future for all was to make it Green and European. Today, even if it feels harder than ever, our fight goes on. Ad maiora, @europeangreens family! pic.twitter.com/8XcTIX0Ntm— Monica Frassoni (@monicafrassoni) February 22, 2018
