Groen, the Flemish Green party in Belgium, held their electoral congress on December 7, and elected the candidates that will lead them in next year's European Elections. The party have elected sitting MEP Bart Staes as first on the list, followed by Dirk Holemans.

According to party president Wouter Van Besien, this ambitious Green team “can improve our environment and society. Groen are the only party that are strong and ambitious on both fronts.” Groen are aiming for a hat trick, after successful election results in recent federal and local elections. Their goal is to help strengthen the Green Group in the European Parliament.

The congress was also an opportunity for party members to engage with the Green Primary, to help make sure that the Greens have as big an impact in next year's elections as possible. Special voting booths were set up, with members including party leader Van Besien, and Bart Staes casting their vote.Van Besien is optimistic. “With this team, we are ready to solve the real problems that people struggle day in, day out”.
