The European Green Party is deeply concerned about the detention and prosecution of the HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas together with at least 11 Pro-Kurdish MPs, which took place today just ahead of the Venice Commission mission in Turkey in order to discuss the emergency decrees adopted after the failed coup attempt.
The Co-Chair of the European Green Party Monica Frassoni said:
"We express growing concern over the bloodshed in Diyarbakir and the outright authoritarian developments in Turkey, which far from easing tensions and facilitating peace is ruthlessly targeting the wrong enemies.
"We are convinced that the EU and its member states would be ill advised to continue to turn a blind eye to these events in Turkey in the illusion of keeping a shaky agreement to lock out migrants and refugees. Playing with values will not strengthen our credibility. We have a duty to help and support the democratic forces in Turkey, those like the mayors of Diyarbakir and Demirtas, who strive for a negociated solution to the Kurdish issue, reject violence and are the legitimate expression of popular vote.”
