PRESS RELEASE
Brussels, 20 January 2017
Commenting on Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration taking place in Washington DC today, the European Green Party Co-Chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:
“There won’t be too many places in Europe seeing champagne corks popping for the inauguration of the American president. Europe will have to stand together closely to meet the challenge that this new president poses to the EU. The European Union needs to present a united front to defend peace and human rights."
“We are aware, though, that Trump's victory didn’t cause the other America to disappear. It is beaten, considerably disoriented and badly organized. In spite of this, the demonstrations at Trump’s inauguration represent a significant first step.
"In Europe we will have to focus much of our transatlantic efforts on working together with these forces and re-discover the constructive America that exists beyond the beltway.”
